The Hollywood of Northern California
Historical Niles District Fremont
In 1916, at the same time the world was engaged in World War I, a young English actor was leaving his mark forever on a sleepy little northern California township called Niles. The actor's name was, Charlie Chaplin.

Chaplin made his silent films for over 4 years under his studio's name of Essanay Studio. It is rumored, his legendary "The Tramp" character was a vision of his that he depicted from the local hobos in and around the Niles area during that time.

Today, Niles is still a sleepy little community with antique shops and building facades of yesteryear. Don't tell the locals Chaplin isn't news anymore, one needs to just walk down it's mainstreet and witness Chaplin is alive and going strong. There's even a Charlie Chaplin day and also a real diesel locomotive train to take tourists sightseeing through the scenic Niles Canyon. The canyon, as the locals will tell you is where the classic movie "The Great Train Robbery" was filmed. One can only speculate if Chaplin had stayed put, what would the area be called today. NILESWOOD?
